Properties: White or off-white powder or solid. Soluble in water, stable in neutral and alkaline solutions, but hydrolyzes below pH 3. Avoid contact with strong oxidizing and reducing agents. Can be used to prepare hypotonic high-density solutions, impermeable to cell membranes, with less than 1% dialyzable substances (including chlorides).
